Best FREE Antivirus: AVG Antivirus

Posted by on February-23-2009 under Free Software

One of the most costliest software that people have to buy for their computers is Antivirus software. However, there are many FREE Antivirus software available out there, which are almost as good as their paid counterparts, and help you Save Few Bucks. I will talk about one such software here.

(This article is a part of my series of articles on FREE Software. Check out other articles in the series here)

Antivirus is the most important security software on your computer. As we are aware, new and technically superior computer viruses are released almost everyday by hackers. Such viruses very easily make their way into our computers, and corrupt the systems. Sometimes, they are even capable of stealing our sensitive data from our system, leading to serious crimes such as Identity Theft.

The best known Antivirus software (such as Norton, McAfee) are quite pricey. Apart from that, they consume so many system resources that they slow down the start-up time, as well as the overall performance of the computer (even though they may claim otherwise). The very good alternative to them are Free Antivirus software. There are many Free Antivirus software available from various vendors, but my personal favorite is AVG Antivirus free edition. AVG Free Edition is the well-known antivirus protection tool. AVG Free is available free of charge to home users for the life of the product. This antivirus program offers rock-solid protection. AVG Free provides includes a real-time shield to prevent infections, anti-virus and anti-malware wrapped up in one engine, and a link scanner for Web surfing with care. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition provides all the necessities to destroy infections, including tools for scanning your hard drive, and e-mail. More than 50 million users around the world use AVG products to protect their computers and networks.

AVG Free is easy to use and will not slow your system down (low system resource requirements). When I started using AVG instead of McAfee, my system start up became amazingly fast, and I had a noticeable overall performance improvement. The program doesn’t tax your system when scanning or when running in the background. (Like this article? Click here to be notified via email when a similar article is published)

Rapid virus database updates are available for the lifetime of the product, thereby providing the high level of detection capability that millions of users around the world trust to protect their computers. By default, the application is set to search for new virus definitions daily. Highlights include automatic update functionality, the AVG Resident Shield, which provides real-time protection as files are opened and programs are run, free Virus Database Updates for the lifetime of the product, and AVG Virus Vault for safe handling of infected files. Is there some other good Free Anti-Virus software available that you are aware of? Let us know by leaving comments.

All these features make AVG a robust software that can protect your computer from all sort of threats. I have used this software for many months, and have never found a case that it missed to detect and remove any virus. This is an amazing product, and, FREE. That is totally unbelievable. You can download it for FREE from here.

Apart from Anti-Virus software, your computer also needs to have a good firewall, an anti-malware, and an anti-spyware. My next articles will cover the best free versions of these software.
